If you are building AI agents that actually do things—create branches, update tickets, run deployments—you need a way to control what happens when the agent calls a tool. That is where MCP gateways come in. They sit between the model and the tools, handling authentication, logging, rate limits and policy enforcement.
But a gateway alone does not answer the deeper question: what does this tool-call mean as a business or engineering action?

Gateway vs capability contract
MCP gateways are emerging because AI agents need a control point between the model and the tools it invokes. That point can handle authentication, routing, logging, rate limits and policy enforcement.
| Layer | Main job | Typical owner |
|---|---|---|
| MCP gateway | Route, authenticate, proxy, observe and govern tool traffic | Platform / infrastructure |
| Capability contract | Define what an agent action is, when it may be used, which inputs are safe and what artifacts to generate | AI platform / SRE / product engineering |
Why both layers matter
A gateway can tell you that an agent called github.create_pull_request. A capability contract can tell you that this call belongs to create_safe_draft_pr, requires draft mode, blocks .env, needs audit metadata and should be described to the agent with specific usage instructions.
Actlane’s position
Actlane should not replace your MCP gateway. It should feed it. The DSL becomes the source of truth, and the gateway becomes one of the places where generated policies are enforced.
Actlane capability
→ policy bundle
→ gateway config or webhook decision API
→ allow / deny / mutate / audit
When a gateway is enough
If your gateway can express all your policies natively, Actlane can generate gateway-native configuration and no runtime is required.
Practical recommendation
Start with generation. Use Actlane to create MCP schemas, agent instructions and policy bundles. Add live enforcement only when the action can mutate external systems.
Why this topic is related to Actlane
Actlane is intentionally not another MCP gateway. It provides the capability contract and policy bundle that an existing gateway, wrapper or sidecar can use to validate, mutate and audit tool calls.
Try Actlane
Actlane is a DSL-first toolkit for safe AI-agent actions. It works with your existing MCP gateway—generating the capability contracts and policy bundles that the gateway can actually enforce.
